Scientific research information was done on brain scans to see what happened to the brain of participants who did meditation and those who did none. One study showed that after eight weeks of meditation there was growth in the hippocampus (part of the brain involved in memory and learning) and shrinkage in the amygdala (which initiates the body’s response to stress.) The more participants reduced stress by meditation the smaller the amygdale became.
Another study showed a thickening of the left pre-frontal cortex (important for cognitive and emotional processes).
Loving kindness meditations (after 4 weeks) changes the way the brain works and people become more caring and compassionate.
Meditation has been shown to improve focus and attention to detail in work situation, therefore enabling a person to be less easily distracted and more efficient.
Another piece of research meditators and non meditators were given Flu vaccines. The meditators produced more anti bodies than the non-meditators. This indicates that meditation boosts the immune system.
